"Sustenance", a multi-panel artwork, was created in Fall of 2021 by Van Go Apprentice Artists in the JAMS program in partnership with the Lawrence Restaurant Association to honor the essential work of those engaged in the food and hospitality service industry.
Four distinct scenes depict unique roles and contributions of food service workers, particularly as they stepped up and supported the community during the COVID-19 pandemic.
A pivoting chef fills many bowls with nourishment while dine-in seats remain unfilled and stability is uncertain. Even when times are tough, many restaurant workers embody selflessness.
Restaurant owners and servers continue to prepare meals to-go for school children and those with limited means. Their work ensures multitudes are not left without a meal.
Farmers and growers resiliently find ways to harvest their crops and ship them to their final destinations. Even when supply chains are disrupted, these producers fulfill their mission.
Our thankful wishes are given to the frontline and essential workers who have been so instrumental in nurturing our community in times of need. They too benefit from meal deliveries while doing their important work.
The architecturally inspired painted borders of each panel are also reminiscent of the many historic buildings along Massachusetts Street. Downtown Lawrence continues to be the epicenter of a thriving community and home to many locally owned and operated restaurants.
You can bring "Sustenance" home with a t-shirt featuring the artwork. All four images have been arrayed on a deep forrest green 100% cotton tee. On the back, the Van Go logo and mural title have been printed.
